Arts Shorts – January 2011

Want to see the world through the eyes of a 17-year-old again? Head on down to the State Art Gallery of Western Australia for the Year 12 Perspectives exhibition for 2010. Some of the most ingenious minds of WA’s graduating class will be displaying their works, presenting a radical cross-section of current affairs and contemporary society. Now in it’s 18th year, the exhibition will be seen alongside pieces from Japanese high school graduates for a culturally fascinating juxtaposition. Check out Year 12 Perspectives at the WA State Art Gallery from January 29 till July 15. Visit www.artgallery.wa.gov.au for further details.

The West Australian Symphony Orchestra understands what summer is all about. That’s why they’ll be down at the Fremantle Arts Centre in February for a summer program of music. This free outdoor concert will include music from some of the great composers including Mozart and Holst, as well as Australia’s Peter Sculthorpe. While you’re down there, check out the new ‘Rising Lotus’ exhibition (pictured) by Swiss-Australia duo Maschi Fontana which runs till March 20. WASO’s free concert kicks off from 2pm Sunday February 13 at the Fremantle Arts Centre, 1 Finnerty St Fremantle. For more info, check www.fac.org.au.

The journey can be as exciting as the destination, right. Well, pay heed to the new exhibition ‘Retrocognitions in Blue’ opening at Free Range Gallery in February. WA artist Glen Stewart filmed a 17th century ceiling fresco through a vessel of moving water and then digitally altered the sequence. Images of Baroque-era paintings flood the short film, morphing with tidal motions. Lasting just over six minutes, this experimental piece dabbles in illusionism for an eerie doppelganger of reality. Recognitions of Blue opens on Friday February 4 at 6pm and runs till February 14 at Free Range Gallery, 339 Wellington St, Perth. Visit www.freerange.org.au for more info.

Colour Lust, a new gallery space will be showcasing some of WA’s most creative minds next month. Susan Sheppard will be just one of the dozen artists putting their wares on display in North Fremantle. The warehouse conversion will link up artists with the community in what has been dubbed an ‘unpretentious, inviting space for visitors’. Organisers are also calling out for budding artists to hold future exhibitions in the space, using the indoor and outdoor areas. Colour Lust Art Space launches on Thursday February 3, Unit 1 /3 Coventry Street, North Fremantle. For more information, contact colourlustartspace@gmail.com.
