Bexta and the Phat Pant Shuffle

Let’s get one thing straight from the start, Bexta may be into trance, but she doesn’t own any phat pants.

‘I do have a pair of pants that have the sort of reflective stuff on the side that phat pants have,’ she admits, ‘but I haven’t got anything as large as a pair of phat pants.’

That’s not to say she doesn’t respect the power and karma of the pants. After all, she says, ‘it’s part of the culture – the guys in the rave pants doing the shuffle.’

That more and more phat pants are being spotted on the streets of Melbourne, Perth and the rest of Australia makes it clear that the pants are more than a (very loud and shiny) fashion statement, they are a clear indicator that rave culture is returning to popular dance music.

‘In the last couple of years dance music has been heavily electro-based, especially in mainstream dance music. It’s moving on from there. You look at Tiesto coming out in May and that’s huge. He’s got heaps of sold out shows – it’s a resurgence of trance and rave.’

With the resurgence, Bexta remains a DJ at the forefront of Aussie trance, teaming up with vocalist Amii on her latest album to craft trance tracks with some pop hooks.

‘I’d been writing lyrics, books and books of lyrics and melody ideas and song ideas, and she was the same,’ Bexta says of the collaboration. ‘She’s got this really pop sounding voice and I come from a more underground trance background – we meet in the middle of the two.’

To catch Bexta for the VIP album launch and hear some of Australia’s finest trance, get to Rise on April 2nd. Barring that, check www.bexta.com for future dates.
