Bonde Do Role – With Lasers (Domino)

While Brazilian act CSS bring a sexy edge to their indie art-rock, compatriots Bonde Do Role are plain old filthy. MCs Marina Ribatski and Pedro D’eyrot plus DJ Rodrigo Gorky sample big dumb arse beats from the Eighties, pilfering from the likes of Alice In Chains and AC/DC to Prince and Tone Loc and then laying down lascivious rhymes in Portuguese over-the-top. The result is an enormously infectious party racket that provides an irreverent introduction to funk carioca, or baile funk – the mightily booming Miami bass-like sound of parties in Rio. The sexually-charged energy of Bonde Do Role’s blistering live shows is captured on much of this debut. Solta O Frango and Geremia sweatily bounce and tease like a voluptuous Rio beauty in a bikini, while the Diplo-produced Gasolina has the Kraftwerk-influenced sparseness of early electro workouts by Afrika Bambaataa (who gets a mention in the lyrics). And at just over 30 minutes long, With Lasers is a party that ends far too early.
