Call it Unholy Union Says Anglican Archbishop

Glenn DaviesThe new Archbishop of Sydney, Glenn Davies has reaffirmed the Anglican Church’s opposition to marriage equality.

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that the Archbishop used his first presidential address to declare that the current marriage debate does not take into account the true nature of marriage.

“Even if the law regarding matrimony were to change in this country, we can still declare such a union as contrary to God’s law, or perhaps we should describe it simply as ‘unholy matrimony’,” the Archbishop said.
In his address the Archbishop noted that agitation for same sex marriage would not disappear but urged church members to look to the Bible as the guide for morality.
“We shall need great courage to stand against the tenor of our society as it slips further and further away from the tenets of scriptural authority and biblical morality, whether it be ‘same-sex marriage’, abortion or euthanasia,” the Archbishop said.
The Sydney Diocese will have it’s Synod later this month. When the Perth synod was held last month two thirds of the church voted to recognise same sex relationships in society. The Archbishop of Perth is yet to make a decision on whether he will veto the proposal.
