Tape Pot

Pepe Heykoop, an emerging designer from the Netherlands describes his art as “Like filling up the pages of my fairytale book,” on his website www.pepeheykoop.nl. His pieces certainly have a sense of the dreamlike about them. Using unwanted items and things which others would see no use for, he recasts them in a new form to make something utterly innovative. His designs have a modernist flair. In one series called ‘Cracks’ he reveals the natural construction process in reverse; showing the transformation of a large porcelain bowl to a cup during the firing process. In this process, the crockery shrinks about 15%.

The Tape Pot, found at Zekka, in King Street, Perth, which also stocks menswear, is part of this series of ‘broken pottery’. The story of the Tape Pot is a little like the tale of the Ugly Duckling. Pepe found two unused teapots in a second hand store and fused them together with tape, then recast them as one. The finished product has a gothic beauty and is a work of art. It looks like a sophisticated, grown up version of the teapot that comes to life in the Disney movie ‘Beauty and the Beast’.

Pepe Heykoop Tape pot is $975 and is available from Zekka. 74 Kings Street, Perth. (P) 08 9481 1772.

Candles from Maison de Cire Trudon

The story of Maison de Cire Trudon candles started in 1643 when a young Frenchman and waxmaker, Claude Trudon, arrived in Paris. Upon contracting a fortunate marriage he become the proprietor of a grocery and candle making shop. Trudon’s heirs followed in his footsteps, refining the process of candle making and becoming candle-makers of choice to French royalty, aristocracy and fashion houses. Maison Trudon also supplied candles to the parish of Saint Roch in Paris and to the royal court of Louis the XIV who used them during his captivity. Saint Roch parish still uses them today.

Maison de Cire Trudon pays homage to its illustrious history but continues to explore its art in search of perfection. Each candle is free of paraffin and petro-chemicals and has a pure cotton wick. Each glass, designed by Ramdane Touhami and artisans from Vinci in Italy, is a deep bottle green with the Maison de Cire Trudon label embossed on the front… a classic look with an exotic feel and evocative scent.

Twelve candles have been created to reflect un moment in French history. The Ernesto, with an aroma of leather, tobacco and wood evokes Havana and the revolution; the Mademoiselle De La Valliere, named for Louis XIV’s mistress, wafts tuberose, and notes of lavender and orange in the Manon are reminiscent of Parisian laundry maids. They come in sets of three for $180.00 or singly at $95.00 for ‘La Grande Bougie’ which weighs about 2.8 kilos and is available in any scent.

The candles of Maison Truson are available at Test Tube Shop 6/595 Beaufort Street, Mt Lawley. (P) 08 9228 1118.
