GALSWA launch film project 'Singing For Our One True Heart'

The Gay and Lesbian Singers of WA have launched a new project celebrating the choirs 25 year history.

Thanks to an ANZ Mardi Gras Community Grant, and additional support from the City of Vincent, they have created a short film documenting how all the different and diverse members of the choir came together.

The film shares a variety of coming out stories and tales of how people found the popular community group, and it’s filled with comical and heartbreaking moments. The project was directed by Helena Cohen-Robertson and Poppy van Oorde-Grainger.

In conjunction with the film, photographer Duncan Wright has taken a series of portraits of choir members and their personal stories are presented alongside. The project captures and celebrates 16 different people connected to the choir, taking in past and current members.

The formation of the choir was inspired by the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir and as part of a gay and lesbian response to the AIDS crisis.

Originally calling themselves the Perth Rainbow Chorus, the choir first began rehearsing in 1993 and their first performance was an AIDS Vigil at St Mary’s Cathedral.

Over their 25 year history hundreds of people have been members of GALSWA, while thousands have enjoyed their performances.

Singing For Our One True Heart will screen at the Revelation International Film Festival this July. It will screen alongside the feature documentary Gay Chorus Deep South.
