Head Scratch: People Say the Darndest Things

Sometimes people will make comments about the LGBT community so uninformed, absurd or downright bizarre that they leave us simply mystified. Here are this week’s weirdest remarks about the queer community that have got us scratching our heads.

First off the bat is research director of the American Family Organisation Ed Vitagliano, who theorizes on the possible causes of homosexuality.

“I believe that some homosexuals have endured sexual abuse or other trauma; others suffer from a deficit of some sort that turned them toward the same sex side of the aisle in an attempt to heal.”

“We are obviously intended to grow through childhood and enter puberty attracted to the opposite sex – because that’s the only thing that makes sense of the biological design inherent in humankind.”

Homosexuality doesn’t make sense of humankind’s biological design? Clearly Vitagliano hasn’t heard of the prostate gland. He also discussed Christian singer Vicky Beeching, who recently came out as a lesbian, a revelation that has apparently left him with some confusion:

“I think most men would think that Vicky was a very pretty lady, and those sorts of appraisals are usually made without thinking. This makes the subject of sexual orientation rather difficult to understand at times.”

Ah yes, the old ‘she’s too pretty to be a lesbian’ conundrum. Tale as old as time.

Mean while in Washington, radio host Tony Perkins discussed the consequences for Christians of gay rights activism with a particularly vocal listener of his program ‘Washington Watch’, who said the following:

“Are we going to find ourselves being loaded in cattle cars like it was when the Nazis took over before we realize we are in such terrible danger?”

Perkins responded to the listener, named Janet, saying that she’d made an “excellent point” and “hit the nail on the head”.

And lastly is Michelle Duggar, star of TLC program ’19 Kids and Counting’, who recorded a robocall and sent it out to the citizens of Fayetteville, Arkansas, urging them to speak out against an antidiscrimination ordinance that aimed to protect the rights of transgender people. The recorded message referred to part of the legislation that would allow transgender people to use the restroom of their choice, and said in part:

“The Fayetteville coucil is voting on an ordinance this Tuesday night, that would allow men, yes, I said men, to use womens’ and girls restrooms, locker rooms, showers, sleeping areas and other areas that are designated for females only. I don’t believe that citizens of Fayetteville would want males with past child predator convictions that claim they are female to have a legal right to enter private areas reserved for womens’ and girls.”

I appears that Duggar’s confusion in regard to what a transgender person actually is did not catch on, as the ordinance was passed this week.
