Hugh Jackman will star in a Broadway revival of The Music Man with the show scheduled to open in 2020.

The musical was a huge broadway hit in the late 1950’s and was made into a film in 1962. The show made a star of Robert Preston, who appeared in both the original Broadway production and the film version. Preston would later appear in other film musicals including Mame and Victor / Victoria, as well as the sci-fi film The Last Starfighter.

The Music Man is about a travelling conman, ‘Professor’ Harold Hill, who signs up people up to music lessons and then skips town with their payments before delivering any classes. His routine goes astray however when he falls in love with the local librarian, but to stay in the town Harold will have to teach the kids how to play, except he actually doesn’t know how to play any of the instruments.

The best known song from the show is Seventy Six Trombones.

The show was last on Broadway in 2000 with actors Craig Bierko, Robert Sean Leonard and Eric McCormack all taking on the lead role of ‘Professor’ Harold Hill. A TV film was produced in 2003 featuring Matthew Broderick, Kristin Chenoweth, Molly Shannon, Victor Garber and Cameron Monaghan.

Hugh Jackman will take on the lead role in a new production which will begin previews on Broadway in September, 2020 and have it’s official opening in October.

Jackman previously won a Tony Award in 2004 for his role as Australian entertainer Peter Allen in The Boy From Oz.

The production will have most of the team who brought the successful revival of Hello Dolly starring Bette Midler to Broadway including producer Scott Rudin, director Jerry Zaks and choreographer Warren Carlyle.

Australian audiences will get to see Jackman perform live later this year when his world tour The Man. The Music. The Show heads to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

The world tour will see Jackman perform a new show with hit songs from The Greatest Showman, Les Misérables and more from Broadway and film, accompanied by a live orchestra.
