Sir Ian McKellen has shared that he considers playing Gandalf and coming out as his two greatest achievements.
The actor joked that he imaged his tombstone to read “Here Lies Gandalf, He Came Out”.
“Those are two of the proudest achievements that I’ve got. I think I’ve been a part of the rapid sensible movement towards an understanding that gay people are the same as the rest of you and should be treated equally by the law, by society,” McKellen said.
The award winning actor was speaking at Buzzfeed Brews and shared his thoughts on a range of issues.
McKellen says he signed on to the X-Men films after Director Bryan Singer drew comparison to the mutants fight for rights and the fight for gay rights. McKellen also commented that co-star Ellen Page’s recent coming out had “gladdened his heart”.
