March 8 is International Women’s Day and to celebrate the occasion the Department for Communities will be running a whole host of events focusing on this year’s theme ‘Sharing the Caring for the Future’.
Spread over two days, the events will be held at Central TAFE in East Perth and include a public symposium, live performances and a public expo.
The IWD Public Symposium on Friday March 6 will bring together some of Western Australia’s top experts in caring and will explore innovative ways to share responsibility for caring across the community.
The symposium runs from 9am to 1pm and will be opened by the Minister for Women’s Interests, Robyn Mary Mc Sweeney MLC. Keynote speakers include Lois Gatley, Chair of the Carers Advisory Committee, Dr Tamara Mackean, Senior Research Fellow at UWA, and Gordon Trewern, CEO of Nulsen Haven.
On Sunday, March 8 the IWD Public Expo will be held from 10 am to 3 pm. It will include events and stalls with information from various community organisations and celebrate the contribution women make as carers in all capacities.
Workshops on various topics related to caring will be held throughout the day.
The IWD Indigenous Celebration, hosted by Channel Ten newsreader, Narelda Jacobs and featuring performances by Kwarbah Djookian Dance Group, Thalia Skopellos and Moana Dreaming will also be held on March 8 from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
