Man Glassed At Connections

A woman was charged with unlawful wounding after she allegedly glassed a man in the face at Connections Nightclub.

WA Police reported that the incident happened around 1am on Saturday morning when the Thornlie woman began talking with the victim and his partner. It is unclear what was said but the woman threw her drink over his partner before striking the victim on the forehead with a glass.

According to police, the 30-year old Karawara man was taken to Royal Perth Hospital for medical attention; OIP understands he received stitches for the wound.

Connections nightclub venue manager Gavin Kingsbury said his team was ‘horrified and disgusted’ by this ‘senseless and violent act’.

‘This was an extremely horrible occurrence (particularly for the victim) and something none of our management, employees or customers would ever wish upon anyone and most definitely something we never wish to see again,’ Kingsbury said in a statement.

He said it was the first time such an incident had happened in Connections’ 35-year history. In response to the incident, Kingsbury announced the venue was replacing all glassware with polycarbonate to ensure this sort of incident would not happen again.

He also said Connections would review all crowd control policies and practices and was in talks with their security company; staff and directors to ensure the changes were carried out. The venue manager said their ID scanner had been used in the police investigation and reminded patrons that the scanner was in place for their protection.

‘We are acutely aware that the use of the ID scanner has been frustrating for many of our patrons,’ he said.

‘However this weekend highlights the clear benefit of having an ID scanner in place as the police were able to obtain data from the unit to apprehend the culprit.

‘We, at Connections pride ourselves on being an extremely safe venue for not only GLBTQI patrons but all people who wish to socialise in a safe and tolerant space.’

The woman is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates’ Court on June 2.
