Marriage Ban Seven Years On

Equal Love is calling for WA residents to rally on August 13 to mark the seventh anniversary of the same-sex marriage ban.

Members of the Greens, Labor, UnionsWA, NUS and the WA Gender Project will be speaking on the day, followed by a faux mass wedding ceremony and a march around the Perth CBD.

Equal Love spokesperson Khyl Hardy said rallies had put the issue in the spotlight and would be what wins equality.

‘We need to put pressure on the Labor Party to change its platform and legalise same-sex marriage. With the National Conference in Sydney coming up in December, this is our opportunity to finally achieve equal marriage rights in Australia,’ Hardy said.

Last year’s August rally drew about 1,200 people.

The Equal Love Rally will be held on Saturday August 13 at Forrest Chase, Perth CBD from 1pm.
