Marriage Equality: Every Family's Issue

marriage adA thought provoking marriage equality video has been released by marriage equality advocates in the lead up to Mother’s Day this Sunday. The video, which shows a heterosexual couple receiving a pregnancy scan, takes an interesting turn when the midwife asks “would you like to not what you’re having?”

Rather than discovering the sex of their unborn child, the expecting couple are informed “you’re having a lesbian”.

National spokesperson for PFLAG, Shelley Argent, explained how parents should consider diverse sexuality when it comes to their kids.

“As expectant mothers, we often wonder what we will have a boy or a girl? We wonder will they be handsome, rich or even a Prime Minister with leadership and vision?

“We hardly consider whether the child will be straight or gay, but we should. And we should also consider the life that they’ll lead as a result. On average, one in five families has a loved one who is gay or lesbian so it’s a relevant question.

“We bring our children into the world to believe it’s a fair and equal society, but regardless of how well we as mothers provide security and stability, we cannot provide them with equality. That’s society’s job and the responsibilities of governments.”

Argent urged both Prime Minister Gillard and Opposition Leader Abbott to reassess marriage equality in Australia.
