Movie News Issue 64

The moving image is in full swing with a variety of film festivals having us under the stars on a balmy evening or escaping into the coolness of a cinema. Luna Leederville will once again deliver the Bollywood Masala Indian Festival from February 15 to 1 March. I’m sure it will feature some truly hip swaying dance and musical numbers accompanied by wistful glances out of the corner of many an actress’ eye in at least one of these films. You’ll be laughing, crying and cringing with the variety on offer including ruthless drug mafia kingpins, mistaken identities, Taliban soldiers and prisoners to the tension of tradition versus assimilation in a new country.

The Film and Television Institute presents Bohemia Outdoor Cinema, the 5th Fremantle Outdoor Film Festival in Princess Park, until 24 February. The locally produced film, Last Train to Freo will feature with an introduction and question and answer forum with crew including behind the scenes footage on the 9th of February. At the festival’s WASA Wednesdays you can catch this year’s nominees for the 20th WA screen awards and cast your vote for the people’s choice awards. Tropfest, the world’s largest short film festival will again be screening this year, catch it on Sunday 18 February at Bohemia. Don’t miss out on these offerings and if you don’t get down to Freo enough make the effort to get out of the city and down to the port!

Why none other than our favourite gal pal Ellen will be hosting the Academy Awards talking of Oscars. I hope all of her wit will not be scripted although I’m sure she’ll slip in some ad-licking somewhere!

The Australian short film which has been nominated for an Oscar, Saviour, is actually from WA filmmaker Peter Templeman. No doubt should it win an Academy Award will definitely be hitting the screen again, if you just missed it as part of the Fitz awards at Fremantle Outdoor Film Festival.

Of course not to be forgotten is our rock and roll loving US mom Melissa Etheridge who has been nominated for Best Original Song with ‘I Need to Wake Upâ? from An Inconvenient Truth. Let’s hope we see a lot more red ribbons this year – they seem to have been lacking in recent years.
