Moving On

Andrew Sunley Smith’s Migratory Projects: The drive out cinema is a series of cross-disciplinary works that focus on migration, mobility and proposed elaborations on Australian do-it-yourself culture. The exhibition is partly informed by the profound effects migrating from the North of England to Australia had on Sunley Smith. The experience gave him a fascination with the turbulence and displacement of migration, the techniques of survival and the creation of comfort in an unknown landscape. ‘I want people to consider, see and feel what it is like to lose all that is familiar,’ says Sunly Smith. ‘Through force or choice, migration and displacement is an ever increasing and pressing issue in the contemporary world.’ Migratory Projects: The drive out cinema is showing at PICA from December 5 until January 27, 2008. www.pica.org.au
