Passion Pit’s lead singer Michael Angelakos has discussed his recent divorce from his wife, stylist Kristy Mucci, revealing that one of the reasons for their break up is that he now identifies as gay.

Angelakos spoke at length to author Brett Eason Ellis on his podcast discussing his treatment for bi-polar disorder as well as his battles regarding his sexuality.

Angelakos told Easton Ellis that for a long time he’d tried to be someone he wasn’t.

“I just wanted so badly to be straight, because I love her so much,” he told Ellis. “I think that was one of the most painful things when we decided to separate.” Angelakos said in the interview.

Angelakos said his wife had been very supportive and had encouraged him to make a decision about his sexuality.

Passion Pit are best known for their 2008 indie hit ‘Sleepyhead’. They have released three albums, the most recent ‘Kindred’ came out in April 2015.

Listen to the conversation below, the section about Angelakos’ sexuality begins around the 49:00 minute mark.
