Piano chords, calm and soothing, open this album and declare it will showcase a very different side of the performer. Harvey’s thoughtful, sometimes murky, occasionally impenetrable, but always haunting lyrics seem the eye of the album with the storm of instrumentation spinning out from that, though with less rage than fans will remember from previous records. That is not to say that Harvey has lost anything, rather that she is exploring a new side, one that takes on an often dark spiritual power on songs such as ‘Broken Harp’ whose chantings could easily pass for a religious incantation. For fans, this album is a must, as it rounds out the collection, balancing some of the angry rock Harvey is best known for.
