Review: Otello – Contemporary and Engrossing

otello050 copyThe West Australian Opera is joined by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, and members from the Cape Town Opera Chorus for this landmark production of Otello. Directed by Simon Phillips, and conducted by Joseph Colaneri, Otello is Verdi’s final tragic opera, fueled by his deep love of Shakespeare.

With a stunning, modern set, Scenery Designer Dale Ferguson relocates the work onto an aircraft carrier, where Desdemona finds herself in a distinctly male environment. Italian tenor Antonello Polombi captivates in the title role, as he heads an all-star cast which includes Cheryl Barker as Desdemona, James Clauton as Iago and Fiona Campbell as Emilia. The result is contemporary and engrossing. This tale of the fall of a noble human being at the hands of a jealous enemy, should not be missed.
