Comedian and sometimes ‘Q&A’ host Tom Ballard has returned to Perth with his all-new stand-up show, ‘The World Keeps Happening’. Throughout the performance, Ballard deftly balances keen observations about the world’s current political climate with filthy and (perhaps to some) confronting humour that made for an excellent evening of comedy.

The show has a simple premise, as Ballard checks off and “solves” the problems of the world by breaking down the major issues. Throughout the set, Ballard bemoans the stagnation of the marriage equality movement here in Australia, the failings of the war on drugs, the rise of ISIS and terrorism and asserted his right to “suck that guys dick”.

Ballard showed off his keen wit, and in a surprising departure from his tame appearances as ‘Q&A’s temporary host, his vulgar side. Ballard tested his audience throughout the evening, becoming more explicit telling tales of his sexual exploits & desires, as well as his love affair with drugs (and the cutie in the audience offering to share).

Somewhat jarringly, Ballard has a tendency to downplay himself after he delivered each joke – as if he was prepared for the audience’s silence. Despite the audience laughing raucously at almost every joke, Ballard garnished each joke with a prepared defence that was entirely unnecessary for this welcoming audience.

Overall, Ballard expertly blends observational humour, politics and filth like a horny, gay Seinfeld for the 2010’s. Hearty chuckles for audiences of all shapes and sizes. Maybe don’t bring your kids.
