Figures from the United Kingdom have highlighted that the introduction of marriage equality did not lead to more heterosexual marriages ending. Since same sex couples began getting married in 2014 Britain’s divorce rate has continued to fall.
Opponents of marriage equality around the world have often claimed that the introduction of marriage equality leads to heterosexual unions being weakened and diluted.
In 2015 22 same-sex couples who got married during the first year that same-sex couples were legally allowed to wed filed for a divorce.
By comparison 101,055 opposite sex couples got a divorce in 2015. The number of opposite sex couples getting a divorce dropped by 9.1 percent. The drop in the number of people getting a divorce follows a trend in recent years that began in 2003.
A report at The Daily Mail notes that the most common age opposite sex couples are divorcing is in their early ’40s, and financial considerations likely play a big part in their decision making process.
