Sydney Celebrates with Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras 2014Sydney’s annual Mardi Gras parade and party were two events filled with spectacle and excitement this weekend.

The Mardi Gras parade featured a giant puppet of Russian President Vladamir Putin, just one of five floats that referenced the struggle for LGBT rights in Russia. Pink Daleks patrolled the route threatening to exterminate homophobia, singer Delta Goodrem was dressed as a flower, while drag star Courtney Act walked the parade in a dress that had a massive train and a contingent of attendants.

Politicians were present including Labor Senator Penny Wong who marched for the first time. Director Baz Luhrumann was honoured by a giant float that performed ‘Love is the Air’, Sydney’s oldest LGBT social group ‘The Pollys’ were recognised by being named chiefs of the parade.

The rain held off all the way through the parade, but as soon as it was over the showers started which resulted in some quite wet revelers arriving for the after party.

Courtney Act gave a stunning performance of ‘A Little Party Never Killed Nobody’ – featuring more than the 68 dancer she cheekily suggested on Chanel 10’s ‘Wake Up’ program earlier in the week. Tina Arena sang her song ‘Set Fire to the Rain’ surrounded by a chorus of tough leather clad men.

The parade will be broadcast on SBS2 on Sunday March 2 from 8pm.
