Director Luca Guadagnino has shared a teaser trailer for his upcoming film Artificial.
The biographical comedy-drama centres on the controversial firing and subsequent rehiring of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Altman is one of the co-founders of the company behind ChatGPT and has become a billionaire through his technology investments.
Altman has drawn media attention not only for his wealth and technological developments, but also for being gay, speaking about his use of psychedelic drugs, and his love of prepping for natural disasters and unexpected civil disruptions to society.
The film stars Andrew Garfield as Altman. Also appearing are Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Ike Barinholtz, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Chris O’Dowd, Zosia Mamet, Billie Lourd, Thaddea Graham, and Mark Rylance. The score has been composed by Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz.
The film will have its world premiere at the 2026 New York Film Festival on October 5 and is expected to receive a theatrical release in the United States on December 25, 2026.
Artificial is the eleventh feature film directed by Luca Guadagnino. After making three Italian-language films, he broke through internationally with 2015’s A Bigger Splash. Since then he has directed acclaimed films including Call Me by Your Name, Suspiria, Bones and All, Challengers, Queer, and most recently After the Hunt.
Guadagnino has also directed several documentaries, short films, and the television series We Are Who We Are. This year he additionally directed a stage production of the opera The Death of Klinghoffer in Florence.
