Through Thick And Thin

By Gok Wan

I know Gok’s pain. I too was once too fat to be fashionable. Thank god it didn’t last long and, like Karl Lagerfeld and now Gok Wan, I was able to pass it off as a dalliance with a new look… one that couldn’t fit sample sizes, unfortunately.

This is a lighthearted read about stylist to the masses Gok Wan’s childhood. This guy wears his heart on his sleeve. He’s happy to speak about obesity. He’s happy to place emphasis on how happy he is now. And as Britain… and the world… slides toward an era of extremes, either being too fat or too thin, Wan weighs in the judicial serenity and certainty of someone who has been there, done that and now looks bloody damn good.

Yes, we’re a society obsessed with our weight. And yes, it might seem a little ironic telling their story of how now their thin life is better. Trust me, it doesn’t get ‘better’, you just reclaim a sense of certainty and control. The goal, as Wan points out, is to achieve balance – be good to your body, but don’t starve your soul. This makes Wan a modern British hero. And god know that country needs some.
