True Colours Recommences

Uniting Care West have announced the recommencement of the True Colours social support group in 2008, meaning that GLBTI young people, their friends and families in Albany and Bunbury will again be able to access support and resources.

The group, which was established in 2005, works on an inclusive model that encourages GLBTI young people and their straight friends to talk about their identities outside of the stereotypical attitudes towards sexuality.

‘True Colours offers young people opportunities to explore their identities above and beyond their sexualities, and focuses on the question ‘what is it about being a young person?’ rather than ‘what is it about to be gay?” Jaye Edwards, Youth Development Officer, from Uniting Care West said.

True Colours couples a fortnightly open space and support group for young people, with social networking for their parents and professional development opportunities for those working with young people. True Colours will also be partnering with Gay and Lesbian Community Services to offer ‘Opening Closets’ training to regional areas in the coming months.

When asked whether or not the program received community support in regional areas, Ms. Edwards said, ‘Everyone keeps saying, it’s about time!’

True Colours in Albany meets the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month from 6-8pm. Contact Billie on 0409 292 297 or ayo@younghouse.org.au for more information. Jaye Edwards can be contacted at Uniting Care West on 1300 663 298.
