WAAPA dancers 'Unleash' with new season of original works

WAAPA’s graduating dancers will be putting their skills and talent in the spotlight with a short season of original works later this month.

Unleash explores ten contemporary dance pieces from WAAPA’s third-year Dance students, set to the sounds of original music from Composition and Music Technology students.

The students’ evocative, inventive dance works encompass a wide range of themes, from serious issues and social concerns through to whimsical, comedic subjects.

In her piece, Fundamental Complexities, Natassija Morrow explores the tricky concept of how we connect who we believe ourselves to be with the reality of who we actually are. Estelle Brown’s
The Aperture examines the transitional spaces beyond reality.

Marnie Fiebig’s Dress Relief takes a light-hearted look at how clothing is much more than it seems, while Gabrielle De Vriese asks us to let out our inner quirks in her piece, Put a Little Boogie In It.

Thalia Munyard has choreographed a neo-classical piece based on Act 2 of the famous Romantic ballet, Giselle, whereas Meg Scheffers found creative inspiration in Rachel Naomi Remen’s quote “Life is neither linear nor stagnant, it is movement from mystery to mystery.”

With another four pieces on the program, this is just a taste of the diversity of ideas behind the students’ choreography, and a fascinating insight into the interests and concerns of these talented young artists.

Jam-packed full of original, thought-provoking works from these exciting young choreographers, Unleash promises to be a highly entertaining evening of contemporary dance.

Unleash will be at UWA’s Dolphin Theatre from 27th – 30th August. For tickets and more info head to waapa.ecu.edu.au
