Australian-born cabaret star Meow Meow has returned to Perth with a brand new show, a contemporary adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Little Mermaid’.

The performance is part two of her ‘Little’ trilogy, following on the success of ‘Little Match Girl’, a lesser known Andersen tale with a Christmas theme.

meowmeow2The WAAPA graduate has recruited some of the most interesting women in music to pen songs for her, including The Dresden Dolls’ Amanda Palmer as well as Australia’s Kate Miller-Heidke and Megan Washington.

Speaking at The University of Western Australia’s Octagon Theatre ahead of tonight’s premiere, Meow Meow showed off her sharpshooting wit and diva dramatics that make her an international star – entering the room, she demanded to know where her chaise lounge was.

“I can’t do this without my chaise lounge!”

Returning to the roots of the fable, Meow Meow explores the darker side of ‘The Little Mermaid’. She says she was drawn to the tale because she could understand being a beautiful mermaid who so desperately wanted legs to be with the one she loves.

In preparation for the show, Meow Meow told media she had become fluent in the language of the dolphin, but declined to show her prowess. You’ll have to head down to the show if you’re keen to see one of the few humans that can communicate with the mammals of the sea first hand.

Meow Meow’s The Little Mermaid will be at UWA’s Octagon Theatre from Wednesday 24th February – Sunday 28th February. Tickets available from Perthfestival.com.au.
