Surf Lifesaving…

Surf lifesavers provide an invaluable service to beachgoers around Australia – saving countless lives and lost children every year. They are idolized by many Australians for the courage and commitment they dedicate to saving lives. All of which are great reasons to join surf lifesaving this summer. However, for those of us from the shallow end of the rock-pool, there’s plenty of reasons to become a surf lifesaver….day job at the beach, access to great gym facilities and whose heart doesn’t skip a beat at the thought of a fetching pair of Speedos?

The Surf Lifesavers Workout:

Even if you don’t have the time/inclination/motivation to be a surf lifesaver, here’s a workout to help you look like one!

For the already (super) fit, start with a 30 minute run on the beach. Begin in a slow jog and once warmed up work in a set of 5 x 100meter sprints. At the end of each sprint, do a set of 10-20 pushups (depending on fitness). Immediately jog again after each set. For the less fit, alternate walking and jogging (rather than jogging and sprinting) and adjust the reps for pushups and sit-ups to your fitness level.

For the second half of the workout, do 5 x 200meter swims in the ocean by swimming out 100meters and back. Once on the beach, do a set of 50 sit-ups. Rest (not too long!) and repeat. Again, adjust reps and distance to suit your fitness level.

Remember these are only suggestions, and are not a substitute for a doctor’s advice or approval.
