No TV Broadcast of Mardi Gras

The 2012 Sydney Mardi Gras will not be broadcast live on television. TV industry website TV Tonight has reported that television stations were asked to tender for the broadcast rights but no agreement could be reached.

The annual parade has been broadcast on Foxtel’s Arena channel for the last three years, and was previously screened on the ABC and Chanel Ten.

The parade will be available to watch through the special Mardi Gras TV Website on Sunday. A one hour highlights package sponsored by Optus will be uploaded.

In a statement Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras CEO Michael Rolik said,

‘We are ecstatic that this partnership between Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and Optus provides us with an amazing opportunity to share our LGBTQI Parade with a wider audience.

‘The digital medium is in-line with current viewing trends and means that people from small regional towns in Australia through to the biggest cities in the world can share in the unmatched excitement that comes with Parade. It will allow our community’s diversity and unified message of equality to shine across the world and we couldn’t be more pleased.’

Melbourne GLBT radio station Joy FM will be providing a live broadcast of the parade that can be streamed from their website.
