According to recent Department of Health figures, 70% of new HIV cases in men in the last three years were heterosexual. According to an article on news.com.au, the increase in HIV among heterosexual men in Western Australia may be partly due to the mining boom and the mix of high salaries with an on/off roster that sees many executives and miners traveling to Asia for work or leisure. WA AIDS Council’s executive director, Trish Langdon, said that WAAC has set up a website – www.sexinothercities.com.au – to advise individuals on how to reduce the risk of infection overseas. She also recommended individuals have a full check for STIs before travelling and remember to pack condoms.
