30 YEARS OF CENTRAL STATION – The Early Years, The House Years, The Hard Years & The History of Dance Music in Australia – Central Station

Central StationSpread over four albums and one DVD Central Station Records celebrates the fact that it is turning thirty this year and from the outset, the story of Central Station Records has been intertwined with the history of dance music in Australia. Central Station was there at the start, a facilitator, a driving force in the growth of the local dance and club culture. Dance music has undergone infinite change since the initial funk and disco explosions of the seventies. From hip-hop to house, and all the hundreds of genres in between, it has developed and morphed into a plethora of sounds that define the sound of our age. If the story of Central Station Records mirrors the rise of dance music in Australia, then the story of Central Station itself, at least the first part of it, is very much the story of one man, Giuseppe Palumbo AKA Master Jo. Jo, as everyone calls him, is Central Station’s founder and for many years, he ran it as a virtual one-man operation. Having emigrated from Italy to Australia in 1967, he was introduced to the world of music retail when, in 1975, he opened a record store in Melbourne. Late in 1986, Central Station Records, the label, was born. With the first album, The Early Years disc one is mixed by Master Jo and covers the late seventies & early eighties funk and disco records that were big selling 12′ singles in the early days of Australia’s club scene. Paul Goodyear was selected to compile and mix disc two with a track selection full of 70’s and 80’s classic disco and early house. The House Years album covers the house genre and disc one is mixed and compiled by Groove Terminator. GT has decided to focus on and highlight Australian produced classics, with every single track on his disc being produced in Australian studios by Australian producers. Disc two is mixed by former Central Station Brisbane store manager & current C.S.R marketing manager Matt Nugent. Matt is also currently resident DJ at Sydney’s Chinese Laundry nightclub. He has focused on classic records from Central Station?s house label Tinted plus a couple of classics that were big sellers through the stores back in the day as well as being scene anthems. Disc One of the Hard Years album is mixed by Nick Skitz and is packed with NRG and hard pumping dancefloor weapons from the nineties and early 21st century. Disc two covers early Rave and some all time trance classics that shaped today’s harder generation, selected and mixed by BEXTA.
