The family of celebrity commentator Perez Hilton has shared an update on his condition following a reported self-harm incident, saying he has been able to communicate and is receiving medical treatment.
“Your compassionate humanity during this heartbreaking time has meant more than words can express,” the family said.
Reports emerged earlier this week after a TikTok livestream raised serious concerns about Hilton’s wellbeing. The incident has also prompted questions about the moderation of livestream content on social media platforms.
Authorities confirmed they transported a man to hospital on 4 August after receiving multiple reports relating to the livestream.
Hilton relocated to Miami earlier this year after undergoing surgery for a stomach ulcer. The move allowed him and his three children to be closer to family members. In their statement, the family said relatives, including his children, niece and sister, had left the property shortly before the livestream.
“When it became clear that Perez was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and harming himself, they immediately fled to protect the children from witnessing any further trauma,” the statement reads.
“Our highest priority right now is helping the children begin to heal from what they experienced.”
Born Mario Lavandeira Jr., Perez Hilton is best known for his celebrity gossip website, which launched in 2004.
Social media platform TikTok told Deadline that an error led to the livestream remaining online for around 20 minutes. A US spokesperson for the company said a moderator error delayed the shutdown of the livestream after automated systems had flagged it for removal within minutes of it starting.
TikTok has subsequently banned Hilton’s account for breaching its community guidelines.
