Earlier this year, One Nation leader Pauline Hanson spoke at the National Press Club and made a series of provocative statements, including outlining her concerns about what she described as a “transgender insurgency” spreading across the nation.
During the speech, Senator Hanson described the movement for transgender equality as a “militant force” that needed to be “confronted” and warned of an “insurgency”.
Following the speech, some transgender people responded on social media with humour, jokingly embracing the language Hanson had used. In a world where debates about pronouns often attract significant attention, some people jokingly asked friends to address them using military titles such as general, major, brigadier, field marshal and admiral.
The Greens have also adopted Hanson’s terminology in a tongue-in-cheek manner, encouraging people interested in what they describe as the “transgender insurgency” to sign up to mailing lists and community activities.
The party has announced a social event aimed at helping people learn more about its policies supporting transgender recognition and rights.
“We are having a social get together to discuss how we can get involved, practical ways we can get involved in politics, and advocate within the community for the rights of all LGBTIQA+ folks,” the WA Greens said in announcing the Transgender Insurgency Social.
The event will take place on Saturday 24 October from 10am to 12pm at The Riff on St George’s Terrace. Light catering will be provided, along with resources and information about Greens policies affecting LGBTIQA+ communities.
