Barn Dance 2026 attracted hundreds of members of the LGBTIQA+ communities for a night of boot-scooting and yee-hawing galore.
Vic Park Pride’s annual fundraiser showed once again why its one of the best nights of the year with a stellar line up of entertainment including the legendary Mucky Duck Bush Band, drag performers and some great numbers from the new choir of the block, the Perth Gay Men’s Chorus.
City Farm in East Perth was filled with plaid shirts, Stetsons, big belt buckles, boots and bandanas.
The night began with an acknowledgement of country from Jim Morrison, founder of Queers for Reconciliation and former Pride WA Parade patron.
Recently Morrison has been receiving praise for the film Genocide in the Wildflower State, which can be streamed for free on SBS OnDemand. He recalled how support from the LGBTIQA+ communities had been the seed funds for the work he does today in the reconciliation space.
“It was the queer community that made the funds for us to establish what we are now.” Morrison said. While also speaking about how gay Indigenous men are welcomed in Noongar society.
Deputy Lord Mayor David Goncalves also spoke, describing the event as one where people come together, help each other and learn together.
“Here’s the thing about barn dance; nobody arrives knowing heel and toe. Some us barley know the steps to the music, but inevitably someone shows you, the take you by the band, you get it wrong and laugh, and you keep dancing together, and that’s community, that’s the whole theme.” Goncalves said.
The Perth Gay Men’s Chorus entertained including a rendition of Chappell Roan’s Pink Pony Club and Matt Corby’s Brother.
The night was filled with line dancing, drag performers, and there was even an actual cow on hand for selfies.
