Abbey Nightclub LA Bans Hens Parties Until Marriage ‘Legal for All’

One of LA’s most popular nightclubs, the Abbey Nightclub (twice named ‘Best Gay Bar in the World’) has set a precedent by banning Hens’ Parties until ‘marriage is legal for everyone’.

David Cooley, owner of The Abbey, told CBS, ‘I just felt after seeing so many bachelorette parties…having our wonderful straight girlfriends having a special time, a special night, having fun that it’s almost a slap in the face to my clientele.’

Although a gay bar, the West Hollywood hot spot has become a Mecca for people of all orientations. Its main claim to fame is that the late Elizabeth Taylor called it her second home.

Cooley’s decision to ban Hen’s Parties was prompted by the ongoing legal fight over California’s Proposition 8 and the recent ban on gay marriage in North Carolina. Cooley writes that he hopes other gay-owned establishments will follow his lead until marriage equality is legal ‘everywhere for everyone.’
