CD Review: The Good, the bad and the awkward

The Good, the bad and the Awkward (ABC Classics)

Sally Whitwell follows up her ARIA awarding tribute to Philip Glass with a new collection of recordings, the common theme all the pieces have been featured in films. The range of tunes covered is diverse taking in the classic’s like Shubert, Satie Hydn and Debussey alongside modern fare from Glass, Thiersen and Morricone. Highlights are a subtle take on Badalamenti’s Laura’s Theme from Twin Peaks, an achievement to bring new life to such an overplayed tune, Yared’s score to Betty Blue and a generous double dose of Michael Nyman with helpings from The Piano and The Diary of Anne Frank.
