The last 48 hours have brought a lot of disappointment for those fighting for marriage equality.
The leaders arguing for this cause have vowed to continue arguing their case. Some of their opponents have over optimistically declared the debate over. I have no doubt that the discussion on this topic will be with us for a long time.
Today Alex Greenwich stood down as Convener of Australian Marriage Equality. He’ll be running for parliament in New South Wales, standing as an independent in Clover Moore’s seat that she’s been forced to abdicate.
While we wish him the best of luck with his next career stage, I am going to miss him as Convener of Australian Marriage Equality.
For writers, there are many people constantly trying to get our attention, encouraging us to write about one topic or another. Whether it is the latest pop star touring, a new show coming to a local theatre, a politician trying to draw attention to an issue or a community group trying to enact change – there are lots of voices calling out.

Alex is a master advocate for the cause of marriage equality. He writes to us daily with a new piece of information, a new viewpoint or a new way of looking at the issue. We don’t always follow up his suggestions; in fact most have not been reported at OUTinPerth. Yet, I cannot think of another current advocate who has been more professional, successful or creative in generating attention to an issue.
Mr Greenwich – a job very well done. I will miss getting an email from you every morning.
