Queen of Monday Nights – Marney McQueen

Marney McQueen is heading back to Perth with her new show which mixes equal parts comedy and music. Catching up with OUTinPerth the star of Hairspray and Priscilla tells us why she loves cabaret shows above all others, 

‘What I love most about cabaret is the immediacy of working with the audience which you can’t get with film or television. People just tell it like it is, they speak up, they call out – and if you pick on someone in the audience they seem to get a great amount of enjoyment out of it.

McQueen tells us how the name of her new show came about,

‘I was on the phone to my co-comedy writer, who lives in London, and I was complaining to him that I was doing eight shows a week in the musical Hairspray and I was single and I wasn’t meeting anyone. The only night I could go out was a Monday night; – we all know Monday’s not a sexy night of the week.

‘So you just end up hanging out with your colleagues, and my colleagues – the vast majority of them would rather go out with each other than with me, and my friend said, “Marnie you’re like rump streak at a vegan barbeque.”

In the show McQueen promised to share all the inside gossip on being a single girl in the theatrical world of big gay musicals, and promised that there would also be an appearance by her alter-ego Waxer to the Stars, Rosa Waxoffski.
