“When I became aware that women accounted for one in five new HIV infections occurring in the U.S. each year, it shook me to the core and I realized this is an issue we ALL need to pay attention to,” said Keys.  “Whether HIV positive or negative, we all have the opportunity to educate ourselves and make a difference.”

In the USA most women being infected with the virus are contracting it through heterosexual sex and to a lesser extent sharing of intervenous needles.

The ‘Empowered’ campaign includes a series of videos of Keys in discussion with HIV+ women, alongside Public Service Annoucements in print, digital, outdoor and television formats. Plus an extended 30 minute version of Alicia Keys discussion with HIV positive women will be available for community groups.
