Stage Queen: Amanda Muggelton

BOOK_AMuggelton_HIT2Amanda Muggelton is one of the hardest working actresses in Australia. At the moment she’s starring in the hit Sydney production of ‘The Torch Song Trilogy’ which has been a highlight of this year’s Mardi Gras Festival.

Muggleton says she wishes this production was coming to other cities in Australia arguing that the themes within in Harvey Fierstein’s four hour opus are as relevant today as when the play debuted in 1978. While WA audiences may have to keep their fingers crossed in hope of seeing that production, Muggleton is heading to Perth for a production of ‘The Book Club’.

It’s not the first time that Muggleton has performed this one woman play, she previously performed it at His Majesty’s over ten years ago, but she explains that the play’s author Roger Hall has graciously allowed this new production to be  updated, allowing the Director Rodney Fisher to add up to date cultural references.

Muggleton says this one actor piece is different to ‘Shirley Valentine’, the one woman show’s she’s famous for, as she gets to play so many different characters in this story about a woman who joins a bookclub, meets a range of different women and then throws the spanner in the works by inviting a hot local author to one of the group’s weekly meetings. ‘It’s much better than playing the one character for the whole night,’ she jokes.

‘The Book Club’ starring Amanda Muggleton will be at the Subiaco Theatre Centre from June 4-8. Tickets can be purchased at ticketek.com.au
