As part of the National Day of Action for marriage equality on August 1, a community forum was held at UWA to discuss relationship recognition for GLBTI people in Western Australia.

Sponsored by numerous community organisations, Rod Swift of GALE presided over the proceedings and explained that Western Australia is in a unique position when it comes to relationship recognition as it is the only state without a Labor State Government.

‘(Relationship recognition) will be quite difficult to achieve here, so the aim of this forum is to discuss how we tackle the problem and what action needs to be taken,’ Swift told the crowd.

Speakers including Jim Morrison from Queers for Reconciliation, Alex Butterworth from the Australian Liberal Students Federation, Lynn MacLaren from the Greens and Pat Wilson from PFLAG, discussed both personal and political viewpoints on the issue before accepting questions from the crowd.

The forum is part of the Families for Freedom project, which will be preparing a submission to the Senate enquiry into same sex marriage. For more information, log onto www.families4freedom.info.
