Straight Allies Give Youth Advice

Minus 18Melbourne based queer youth service Minus 18 has produced a video to combat homophobia.

The video features straight people sharing what they would say to their ‘Year 7 self’ about their attitudes towards people who are gay or trans*. Watch the video below and head to the project’s website to read the stories of the people involved.

The project’s website highlights that not all LGBT people are victims of bullying or insecure about their sexuality, but encourages straight youth to be good listeners. As the site says,

“Don’t assume that just because someone’s LGBT that they’re going through a tough time, or being bullied, or insecure about their identity; heaps of people are pretty confident in themselves.”

“But sometimes your friends might need a little more support – and that’s where you can come in. The important thing is not to assume, but listen and be there if needed.”
