WA Liberals to Debate Gay Marriage

Colin BarnettA branch of the WA Liberal Party has put same sex marriage on the agenda for the party’s upcoming state conference.

The Curtin division of the party has put forward a proposal outlining that the issue of marriage equality should not be an issue for the parliament or the party room but  an issue that all Australia’s vote on through a national referendum.

The Curtin branch also calls on the party to not take the issue to the courts.

“We call on the federal parliamentary party to actively oppose and overturn any attempt by any branch of government, particularly the judiciary, to impose a redefinition of marriage on the people,” the motion says.

Last month Attorney General George Brandis declared the federal government would fight the ACT’s same sex marriage legislation in the High Court. The case is due to be heard in early December.

Also amongst the topics to be debated is a call from WA’s Young Liberal’s asking the federal government to “eliminate laws that require radio and television broadcasters to be ‘balanced'”.

Suggestions from the party’s state conference do not automatically become party policy, they are sent forward to the federal party for consideration.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott, WA Premier Colin Barnett and Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop are expected to speak at the conference.
