Queen Elizabeth II has acknowledged gay people for the first time in her 62 year long reign. The Queen issued a statement congratulating the London Gay and Lesbian Switchboard on their 40th anniversary.

It is believed that the Queen has never previously acknowledged the existence of any LGBTI organisation or ever made a public reference to the existence of gay people. Despite being the patron of a plethora of charities and organisations the Queen has never supported or visited a gay organisation. Her groundbreaking statement will be the first time a reigning British monarch has acknowledged the LGBTIQ population.

Praise for the British charity has come from all sides of politics. Prime Minister David Cameron said,”Over the 40 years since it was established, the London Lesbian & Gay Switchboard has made a real difference day in and day out to the lives of LGB&T people.

“I would like to pay tribute to the volunteers and staff of the switchboard for their dedication to providing help and support to the LGB&T community and I wish you every success in the future.”

In her statement the Queen offered best wishes and congratulations to all involved in the organisation describing it as a “most special anniversary”.
