Walsh shared this revelation in a personal essay published on Australian music website Tone Deaf, writing about the challenges of working in a male-heavy environment, coming out to the other Love Junkies and getting comparisons to transgender Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace and feeling like neither a boy or a girl.

The news has been shared on the band’s Facebook page and the messages of support have already been rolling in. “Doesn’t matter. Shreds drums” writes one commentator, “What a legend” writes another, with one fan sharing that they can’t wait to see Walsh thrashing the drums in a frock.

You can read Walsh’s essay, entitled ‘Love Junkies’ Lewis Walsh: I Don’t Know If I’m a Boy or a Girl, But That’s Ok, Right?’ on Tone Deaf.
