Leader of the House Christopher Pyne has confirmed his support for marriage equality and revealed how he came to that decision during a speech at the National Press Club.

Promoting his book ‘A Letter to My Children’, Minister Pyne revealed it was children who led him to reconsider his stance on marriage. Having seen many instances during his time in office of homosexual parents losing their children due to legal technicalities and omissions, Mr Pyne became concerned.

“I think that’s wrong and I think that same-sex couples who are in that situation should be in a position to have some legal basis for their relationship and that’s why I’ve changed my view,” Mr Pyne told the Press Club.

Liberal backbencher Warren Entsch introduced his marriage equality bill with cross-party support earlier this month, where only Minister Pyne and Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull showed up to represent Liberal Party frontbenchers.

believes that a free vote for Coalition members would be the most effective way to enact marriage equality in Australia, having spoken out against Prime Minister Tony Abbott for stacking a party room debate on the issue by inviting the National Party – known for their staunch opposition of changes to the Marriage Act.

“South Africa, UK, the US, Ireland, New Zealand, most of the European countries have managed to do this without the sky falling in and I think Australia will end up going in this direction.”
