A new survey conducted in the regional seat of Gilmore in New South Wales has shown 62% of the community are in favour of marriage equality.

Liberal MP Ann Sudmalis conducted the survey to gauge the thoughts of her constituents as Australia waits for the Turnbull Government to enact their plan to put forward a plebiscite at the next federal election.

“Clearly, this is a great result and it shown not only majority support for marriage equality, but how highly-motivated supporters are to express their views in favour of reform,” said deputy national director of Australian Marriage Equality Ivan Hinton-Teoh.

“Long held preconceptions are being challenged across Australia by local surveys that ultimately show majority support for marriage equality.”

Regional Western Australia recently affirmed community support, with Port Hedland recognising same-sex couples through a declaration register.

Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett enacted the policy in August after engaging with her community and encouraging public discussion.
