Art Shorts – March

IN BUCKETS & SPADES
One of the undisputed highlights of the arts calendar, Sculpture By The Sea will return this March to Cottesloe Beach for its seventh annual exhibition. This free event will see one of Perth’s most beloved pieces of coastline transformed by the imagination and ingenuity of over 60 local, interstate and international artists. Think large scale flag installations or elaborate plays on beach culture – either way, what it is certain is that Sculpture By The Sea will yet again deliver a sculpture sea garden of amazing delights. The event kicks off Thursday March 3 until Tuesday March 22, with the public able to vote for their favourite installation. www.sculpturebythesea.com

BABY I’M AN ARTSTAR
Now in its third season, ArtBar takes all the magic and wonder of the Art Gallery of Western Australia and brings it outside, under the stars. To celebrate, Basement Birds will be making an appearance, putting to good use the newly created Gallery Wetland Stage. So who are Basement Birds? Think Kevin Mitchell (aka Bob Evans), as well as Eskimo Joe frontman Kav Temperley and solo artists Steve Parkin and Josh Pyke. Tickets to this event will also give you access to all of the current exhibitions. So be an art star and visit the ArtBar. Happens Thursday April 7. Tickets available through BOCS. www.artgallery.wa.gov.au/ArtBar

I DO PROPOSE….
Freerange Gallery, that home of original thought, is looking for new ideas to fill the intimate space it provides. They are seeking work which covers an array of mediums and practices, work which challenges and engages in equal measures. The gallery itself is not-for-profit and seeks to engage Perth audiences with an array of exhibitions which bring together either solo or group efforts along with performances and projects. As the name suggests, you have free range. Proposals are for the 2011/2012 program and are due Monday April 4, 2011. www.freerange.org.au/proposals
