After much speculation following the season four finale, creator Josh Thomas has confirmed his award-winning comedy Please Like Me has come to an end.

Thomas’ first foray into television was lauded as an earnest, insightful and hilarious look at contemporary Australia. The program explored sexuality, mental illness, youth, family and so much more through the uniquely brilliant mind of the comedian and his writing team.

In a statement posted to Facebook, Thomas and the official Please Like Me page confirmed that last year’s season was indeed the end for the program.

“The other producers and I have decided that Season 4 of Please Like Me is the last. We decided this because we are really happy with what we’ve made and feel like it is complete,” Thomas writes.

“I want to thank everyone who has watched the show and sent me a friendly note. This show is so intensely personal, it recreates the most intimate moments of my life and lays them out for anyone to watch. Seeing how people have connected with this show has been tremendously confidence building for me and I’m really grateful for that. Thank you.”

Thomas goes on to thank the cast and crew and producer Todd Abbott for helping build the show. Thomas also thanked his parents, who appeared in the program played by Aussie legends Debra Lawrance and David Roberts.

“…Thanks Mum and Dad! They made me and then kept me alive which is really cool. They’ve been incredibly supportive of this show even though at times it makes them look like twats. This show has brought me so much joy and I’m sad it’s over but also things have to end. I’m focusing now on what’s next, I hope to see you there.”

The much-loved program garnered a strong over-seas fanbase, screening on US network Pivot and Netflix as well as the ABC here in Australia. Thomas ended the statement by leaving fans with hope for a future project.

“This show has brought me so much joy and I’m sad it’s over but also things have to end. I’m focusing now on what’s next, I hope to see you there.”
