Swooping down on fashion week

Fashion Week

The plethora of design talent here in Western Australia is ever expanding, and we are fortunate that we have some amazing talent putting Perth on the map. From the feminine designs of ae’lkemi’s Alvin Fernandez to the incredible range of both men’s and women’s fashion from Pat Kong at Preacher, we’re totally spoiled for choice when it comes to quality local design. With both men’s and women’s wear now being designed here in Perth in ever greater quantities, there are options for cutting edge, amazing, local fashion for every person interested in looking good!

To say that there have always been members of the GLBT community involved in fashion is perhaps stating the obvious, but one of my aims in this column is to present some of this great talent to you each month.

After graduating from the Central TAFE Design School at the end of 2004 the three talented designers from One Fell Swoop: Nikolina Ergic, Mariana Mazzurra and out design team member Daniel Romanin burst onto the Perth fashion scene. This talented trio of designers is committed to understanding the world around them, and this shows in their ability to harness innovative design concepts in their fashion.

Selling a range is a daunting task for any designer, no matter how long you have been putting your creations on the catwalk. The team of One Fell Swoop have had the backing of many in the Perth fashion industry, which has helped their star ascend to the heady heights of Sydney Fashion Week over the past two years.

Now moving onto their third spring/summer release this talented trio recently showed their newest range at the GAFFA gallery in Surry Hills to buyers and the media as part of Rosemount Australian Fashion Week in Sydney on Friday April 27, and then again during Fashion Week’s ready to wear parade at in Circular Quay on May 3.

The latest collection entitled ‘For Jane Doe’ melds Victorian and futuristic silhouettes, evoking a lush opulence and blending wily feminine styling with a masculine edge. One Fell Swoop have once again pulled together elements with harmonious line explored in silks and cotton. These are reinforced by a subtle palette of colour that is juxtaposed against rococo floral motives and royal tartans. Incorporating rounded, shell-like hips and sharply accentuated busts, ‘For Jane Doe’ is a playful collection that will further enhance their reputation as a cutting edge design team.

You will hear people call the designs relevant and contemporary. Personally, I think that this is the range that will garner the label even greater national attention. Each of One Fell Swoop’s ranges firmly establishes the design team as a WA fashion success story.
