The singer recently cancelled dates during her US tour when she began experiencing back pain. Earlier today the singer revealed that the pain she was experiencing had turned out to be breast cancer that has metastasized to the sacrum.

“I decided on my direction of therapies after consultation with my doctors and natural therapists and the medical team at my Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia,” the singer said in the statement.

Newton-John was confident that after a short course of photon radiation therapy and some recuperation she’d be back in action.

The 68 year old singer successfully beat breast cancer in  back in 1992 and since then has been one of the world’s leading advocates for cancer awareness and research.

Newton-John has raised millions of dollars through her records and established the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre in Melbourne.

The singer spoke to OUTinPerth just prior to the centre opening in 2012 and shared her excitement about the project coming to fruition after ten years of fundraising.

“So much has happened in my life since I was diagnosed with cancer and, I have had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people, from doctors to healers to fellow cancer thrivers!” Newton-John told us.

Australian stars have voiced their support for Olivia in her new battle with the disease. Tina Arena said the two had been dear friends for a long time and she had so much respect for Newton-John.

“She is someone I have the absolute utmost respect for. She’s a human being who’s given so much to the fibre of this country and also to the world. Knowing the kind of woman she is, she turns things around and she is capable of turning this around too. She is a fighter.” Arena said.

Delta Goodrem, who portrays Newton-John in an upcoming television mini-series, posted her support to the singer online.

“Sending my deepest love and support to my hero, friend and mentor Olivia as she starts treatment. If there is one person that embodies hope and healing it’s Olivia. She is one of the world’s kindest and most giving humans and I send you all my love and well wishes. Love you so much. All my heart Delta xx.” Goodrem posted.

People wanting to show their support for cancer research can make donations to the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre.
